Howdy, everyone: As I posted yesterday, I have a lot of stuff happening in the background (as well as being hit by this bug that’s going around) so from today until next week,  sometime,  I’ll mainly be posting headline roundups, although they’ll be interspersed with stories, if and when I can manage it. But normal service WILL be resumed, and as soon as possible. If  you want to help out in the meanwhile, please send submissions (anonymous or named) to p2pnet @ shaw dot ca .

p2pnet news view P2P | Advertising:- p2pnet complains about Google largely because of company’s constant cynical disregard for the people who use its many and various products, all of which are in one way or another linked to its core advertising business. Google started out with Do No Evil as its motto. But that soon fell by the wayside and five years ago, p2pnet reported on the censorship of Google news sources inside China, something it tried to spin as ‘omitting’ or ‘not including’.

Dick Huey to Fred Wilhelms …

Posted in Software, filesharing on November 17th, 2009 by admin – Comments Off

p2pnet news view P2P:- In July, 2007, “an unsigned Reader’s Write accused Fred Wilhelms (right) of having a vested interest in criticizing SoundExchange for not paying artists,” said p2pnet last month, going on »»» The author later proved to be Dick Huey (right), one of the RIAA-appointed ‘label representatives’ on the SoundExchange board of directors. An exchange of comments ended in Huey agreeing to answer questions put to him, partly in apology for what he acknowledged was an unjustified personal attack on Wilhelms Huey’s responses have been a long time coming, but here they are, in part, at least »»» Dear Fred, This took longer to respond to than I wanted – both because of a busy couple weeks, and because we moved away from the topics where I have direct knowledge and into areas that require research on my part. I’m not interested in being a SoundExchange conduit for every question you’d like answered – SoundExchange has official communication outlets, which you should engage directly with to answer your questions.

World’s first iPhone worm in the wild

Posted in Software, filesharing on November 16th, 2009 by admin – Comments Off

p2pnet news view Security | Mobiles:- iPhone owners in Australia “awoke this weekend to find their devices targeted by self-replicating attacks that display an image of 1980s heart throb Rick Astley that’s not easily removed,” says The Register , going on: “The attacks, which researchers say are the world’s first iPhone worm in the wild, target jailbroken iPhones that have SSH software installed and keep Apple’s default root password of ‘alpine.’ In addition to showing a well-coiffed picture of Astley, the new wallpaper displays the message ‘ikee is never going to give you up,’ a play on Astley’s saccharine addled 1987 hit ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’.” “Tricking victims in to inadvertently playing the song has become a popular prank known as Rickrolling.” And, it’s a lot more than a joke, confirms Peter Hansteen on That grumpy BSD guy “The rickroller is about bad passwords, no more, no less,” he says, going on, “this incident only underscores what we’ve been repeating until your eardrums wear thin an my vocal cords swell from exhaustion: Publishing your username and password is a really bad idea. It’s almost as bad as picking a guessable password. “Add to this that the fact, as we’ve noted here earlier, there is a whole cloud of hijacked machines out there beavering away at guessing passwords right now, and they have been at it for quite a while.” Finally, he adds, “some words of advice for those of you who want to avoid both rickrolling and getting cracked by other password guessing” »»» You should at least consider setting a password policy and enforcing it with something like John the ripper , which more than likely is available at the cost of a few keystrokes from your package system

Posted in Software, filesharing on November 14th, 2009 by admin – Comments Off

p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:- OpenNap suffered the same fate as Napster, closing shop after being threatened by Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony Music’s RIAA, but it’s now being brought back to life as OpenNap 2.0 and is  slated to start development next year, said p2pet at the start of the month, also noting: “But only if it satisfies the RIAA.” Many (most?) p2pnet readers were, well, just a little skeptical. Observed Spike »»» The OpenNap protocol was never shut down, contrary to what the “revivalâ€? states. Some OpenNap/SlavaNap servers still exist, look for them on http://gotnap.com I still connect to a certain OpenNap server to speak to all my oldtime online friends (known for 10+ years to this day).

UK.gov denies innocent will be hit by filesharing regime The Register Forthcoming laws to reduce the level of peer-to-peer copyright infringement with threats of disconnection will affect “hardly anybody, other than the most serious and egregious recidivistic offenders”, according to culture minister Sion Simon. The Digital Economy Bill, to be announced in the Queen’s Speech next week, will mandate a regime of notifications warning against illegal filesharing, followed by restrictions on bandwidth and possible suspension of the broadband accounts of those who do not stop.
