Major Hollywood ‘anti-piracy’ shake up

Posted in filesharing on October 19th, 2009 by admin – Comments Off

p2pnet news view | P2P | Movies :- “Hollywood fears that the pirating of movies will become as common as the illicit sharing of music files.” Clearly, the auld grey heads who run Time-Warner, Fox, Disney, Columbia, Paramount and MGM haven’t been near the P2P networks, lately. There, the sharing of movies continues to be prolific, thanks to a significant extent to Hollywood insiders who supply screeners, work prints, preview releases and other ‘product’ for online consumption. On top of that, the many millions of DVDs routinely pumped out for retail sale serve as templates for organised criminal counterfeiters and duplicators who sell the results on underground and black markets, as well as the street corners and flea markets of the world.

Neo-Nomad on the loose

Posted in filesharing on October 6th, 2009 by admin – Comments Off

p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:- A couple of years ago I wrote about my life as a ‘neo-nomad’, one of the growing number of people who use digital technologies to allow them to work from anywhere, living with ‘no office, colleagues who are largely engaged with online and often a number of overlapping projects to be juggled and managed at the same time’. It was a pattern of life that had emerged for me over years of being freelance as I put more and more of my work on a laptop and found that I could generally rely on being connected to the Internet when I needed to be, initially over dialup lines ‘borrowed’ from amenable friends, then via open wireless networks, and now thanks to the good graces of my 3G dongle.

p2pnet news view | P2P |  Politics:- US Federal Communications Commission chairman Julius Genachowski recently pointed out the FCC has four Internet principles, “that guide our case-by-case enforcement of the communications laws,” summarising them like this: “Network operators cannot prevent users from accessing the lawful Internet content, applications, and services of their choice, nor can they prohibit users from attaching non-harmful devices to the network.” During a recent speech, he mooted two more to, “reflect the evolution of the Internet and that are essential to ensuring its continued openness to wit »»» The “fifth principle of non-discrimination; and, The sixth principle of transparency Now an online European Open Net petition has been organised, “in light of the decisions affecting the open Internet being taken at European level, and in reaction to the statement made in the USA on 21 September by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski,” says the petition site , declaring »»» These principles should be enshrined in European and national laws, and enforced by the relevant authorities in a consistent manner across Europe. Below, in full, are the new principles as put forward by Genachowski at the Brookings Institution, Washington DC, on September 21 »»» Fifth Principle of Non-Discrimination The fifth principle is one of non-discrimination — stating that broadband providers cannot discriminate against particular Internet content or applications. This means they cannot block or degrade lawful traffic over their networks, or pick winners by favoring some content or applications over others in the connection to subscribers’ homes.

Mark Cuban on net neutrality: ‘Flat out wrong’

Posted in filesharing on September 28th, 2009 by admin – Comments Off

p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:- “The moment you hear someone warning about stark changes as a consequence of net neutrality, you know they’ve got it wrong,” says networking and protocol expert Robb Topolski. He was talking about recent remarks from Mark Cuban who apparently believes the  net will slow to a pinful crawl if net neutrality becomes the accepted norm. “Net neutrality is about preserving the Internet’s design for ISPs to forward packets toward their destination as fast as they can, without first inspecting the content for ‘management’ purposes,” Topolski told p2pnet
